Time to Celebrate?!

I know it’s Lent, but man, there were a lot of things to celebrate this week.

Baseball is Back!

Let’s start right off with baseball. MLB and the MLBPA accepted terms on a new collective bargaining agreement, ending the 99 day lockout and saving our trip this summer. It’s with that joy that I can share the list of events we’ll be hosting this summer. There are still more to come, but this is what we have at the moment.

Time of Confession

For many, Lent is anything but a time of celebration, but it really is if you think about it. How wonderful it is that God allows us to do penance, that he forgives us of our sins! The sacrament of penance isn’t supposed to be endured, it’s celebrated! This week, Fr. Patrick and I discuss the good, the bad, and the ridiculous images of confession in media.

Finding Hope in Affliction, New Book

What do we do with poverty? Hunger? Persecution? Violence? For many, these are things to be avoided because they mark a tragic, downtrodden life. And yet, Jesus is very clear that those who experience these things will have future glory. What do we make of the Beatitudes, and how can they help us right now? That’s the topic of my new book, releasing April 6. You can enter to win a free copy by clicking here.

Superheroes Among Us

What if Superman grew up just an ordinary guy and slowly learned throughout his life that he was “super”? In a way, that’s what Unbreakable is about, and it might very well be the best comic book movie ever made.

Off to LA!

Hope everyone has a great week! If you’re attending Los Angeles Religious Education Congress next week, look for me among the masses!

Peace and good,

Fr. Casey

  1. I see you plan to speak in Beantown the weekend of the Red Sox v Yankees series ! Nicely played Padre ! Keep up the good work and good luck too !

  2. My Friday was brightened by an email from you informing me that I had won a copy of your new book. I look forward to reading it. This will definitely enrich my Lenten experience! Thank you so much!

  3. Dear brother,

    Time to celebrate?

Not this week, not for me. I worry about my brothers and sisters in OFS in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus, and the innocents living there.

Yesterday evening i received so many diapers and babyfood for the children from Ukraine that will be in my municipality on Monday. Gifts from supporting people who feel powerless, but are doing what they can. I am grateful for the help, but there are so many lives lost, so many dreams shattered, there is so much pain, grief and despair…

Please do not forget to pray for the victims of war before you enjoy sports.

    Peace and good, Mariette

  4. Thanks to both of you!
Your reactions and comments about movie confessions touched me positively (though at times painfully) in many ways. I’d not heard the word, “pedantic” before. I looked it up and found that I am – (Yuk!).
Father Patrick’s, “….give ’em a Teflon jacket and send ’em on their way….” had me laughing (I notice you edited-out Father Casey’s reaction). As I have a hyperactive conscience, I’ll wear that metaphorical jacket!
I’m glad for your sakes that the baseball is back on so your tour this summer is still a go. The pandemic is waning and I hope the new book gets into places that will cultivate a beatific / beatitudinal perspective in many.
Prayers for Ukraine, Russia…all of us,
    Geoff

  6. Father Casey,
I enjoyed the Upon Friar Review of TV confessions. I laughed and reflected, and felt grateful for all of the blessings I have received in the confessional. So many broken moments when the Holy Spirit has truly guided the priest in his words to me. This episode also reminded me of a movie you may enjoy and maybe even review. It is called: “I Confess” by Alfred Hitchcock. Thank you for the blessing of your ministry. Prayers for you and all the friars!

  7. i know you love Baseball, but share a thought for the people of Ukraine and the terrible war. There is a lot not to celebrate just now.

  8. Glad you are never pushed off track by world events. Keep on feeding the sheep.

    • Dear Simon,

May I remind you that the Holy Father sent TWO of his Cardinals to Ukraine, do you think he is off track?
