Archbishop Viganò is at it again. In an interview published today, the former nuncio to the United States claims that all of the problems of the 1960s revolutions have a single cause: Vatican II.
Yes. The Women’s Liberation Movement was Vatican II’s fault. Blame the Gay Rights Movement on us. Vietnam protests? Sexual Revolution? Civil Rights marches? All the Church’s doing.
It’s a bit of a far-fetched argument, even for him, but he is by no means the first person to make such claims. In fact, I hear these sorts of things online so often that I actually filmed a video two weeks ago on this very topic, ready to be released today. Is it a direct response to Viganò? Only if you follow the logic that what comes after was caused by what came before… which I’ll address in the video.

Really? Vatican has no problems?So how do you explain the fact that most clergyman today do not have to profess anti-modernism ? What about Pope Francis /Vatican secret agreement with China allowing it to recommend new bishops? Honestly there is no problem? I rather take the opinion of AB Vigano, he was growing up then and was there during the council.
Say what you want about the Council—Don’t change the Mass! Say the Rosary before or after Mass–Not During!!! Say the prayers in our own language–not Latin!!! How wonderful it is to say the responses with
enthusiasm. And listen to the Old Testament and the Psalms. And see the Priest during the Consecration!
And hear all the prayers that we did not hear the Priest saying in Latin. And all the prayers we say together!
And the Music and songs that the Protestants knew but Catholics didn’t know!!! Please, please don’t change the Mass because some Traditionalist Converts want it the old way. The Mass is so beautiful when given the attention that it deserves. Please, Please, Please leave it the way it is!!!!!!!!!

The Second Vatican Council is fundamentally weaker than the previous Council. Vigano has a point. How did the church stand strong against even BIGGER change,like the Holocaust,or the French Revolution, or Great Schism? Thats because the church was more rock solid and emphatic about her teachings. How can a Sexual Revolution crumble the church,but not French Revolution (which was about 1000 times worse)? Thats because Vatican 2 is a fundamentally weaker Council.Why tell the nuns to stop wearing traditional robes? Why strip the churches of incense? Why alienate the traditional Catholics within the church? All the council did was create a divide within the church. It just split us apart,between Traditionalist vs Liberals. And thats the council’s doing,because it no longer united itself under tradition.
That’s an apples to oranges comparison. The speed of media and information, and the amount we are exposed to makes a huge difference from the time French Revolution or WW2. Not to mention, who controlled the distribution of information back then…
My opinion (just a regular, practicing Catholic): Vatican II is a miracle, and a profound gift that church leaders back then knew it was vital to open up the Church for the times ahead… move to make it as relevant (ding! Points to Father Casey 😀 ) to our experiences in the modern world. In my experience, fellow Catholics today feel the Church is so immediate in their lives, to experience a Church in action.
You make a fair point, perhaps my comparison was little off. But you didn’t refute my point about removing traditional practices, which just mad traditional Catholics upset. This council is divisive for a reason. Its not a “gift”. It was a rejection of tradition-which the Catholic Church claims to hold so dear.
If people leave the church because of relatively minor issues (such as clothes, incense, or Latin) then the church was never about God or the Gospel, to begin with.
Mr. Forsberg. Obviously they are not leaving for matters such as clothes, incense, or Latin. They are leaving for a faith destroyed by witnessing the way millions of consecrated men and women trashed the faith with clothes, incense, and Latin and many many many many other things discarded as well. Do you think the common practice of taking teenage young men out into a parking lot, handing them a sledge hammer, giving them a few statues of the Blessed Mother and statues of other saints and instructing them to smash those statues in the face in the name of a new liberated Church really had an “inspiring” effect on the growth of anyone’s future faith? Are you as delusional as Father Casey?
Do you really think there are no correlations to such things as VII and the fact that the majority of Catholics are pro-abortion and reject the real presence? And before you join Fr. Casey in saying something foolish like bad catechetics, where would the ecclesial culture that allowed those decisions to be tolerant of bad catechetics have come from in the first place?
I’m just going to address your comments about incense. Incense was mainly used “back in the day” to cover up the prevalent body odor because bathing wasn’t a big deal and deodorants weren’t invented. Yes, there’s something to the “Prayers rising like incense”. HOWEVER, my take on this in modern day —- Asthmatics, COPD, allergies are much more prevalent. I need to “get out of Dodge” if they whip out the incense. Some churches still use it on a regular basis and I avoid those churches. Change is inevitable – it’s necessary or the Church will turn stagnant. Don’t get me wrong, we have some beautiful tradition(s) w/in the church, however getting EDUCATED about it can be the problem. You do make some good points, however, I for one, would never want to go back to Latin Mass and I’m very asthmatic (mild COPD) and would welcome the demise of incense (I do love that smell, but it sets me off in a full-blown attack).
Fun fact: the rise of Christianity caused a complete collapse of the incense market (pagans were the real big-time users of incense).
No doubt the changes in Vatican 2 made traditional Catholics upset. Thankfully, these days, you are not denied to practice the traditions that make the faith to Jesus more direct to you.
Just as you are free to do so, there’s no need to deny the experience of other Catholics engaged and feel enriched in the current practices today either. Celebrating Mass as a family, as a community is beautiful and involving, deep in a joy in our collective for Jesus, and you don’t get anywhere else. It remains a gift for me.

Fr. Casey, once again yo have done your homework and prepared an excellent presentation. If we want to mediate deeper over the sad state of the Catholic Church, we should go back to what Our Lady told Lucia in the second secret at Fatima. So you are bothered by private revelations? Fine. the Church teaches that we are not obligated to believe in them and that in public revelation we have all we need to be saved. Just remember that God has every right to communicate with His children when he wants to, how he wants to, and using the means he wants to.
You can be incredibly shallow and foolish, not to mention devoid of any truthful Catholic understanding of the human condition, that your snarky infantile disrespect for the greatest prophet of the last hundred years makes clearly obvious.
Of course the complete undermining of Catholic witness in the modern world makes all the world’s evils possible. Why do you think the Church exists? To save humanity for sin even while knowing the human condition is imperfectible. When the Church seeks to formally abandon its God given mission, as it did in Vatican II when it clearly sought to give up the doctrine of original sin, individual Catholics throughout the world, subsequently gave up their sense of mission. Only a religion hater, an anti-Catholic bigot, or a pseudo-Catholic would fail to understand this self-evident reality, clear to anyone with a Catholic imagination.
How evil to see the priest during Consecration when the focus should be on God. How evil to make the words of the Mass a rote exercise that has never distracted anyone from their giggling conversations with their neighbors. How evil to use a vernacular language rather than a universal Language that expresses an innate, clear, and humble connection to the communion of saints of the past as we must. And get rid of the trashy self-worshiping music once and for all so that Catholics who want to be Catholic can actually attend a Catholic Mass again and not have to endure Catholic anti-Catholic bigots reducing them to a caricature like “traditionalist,” whatever that means.
Boniface X is the true Pope. Francis is an Antipope. This “priest” is deluded, and he’s not even validly ordained. Vatican II overtly contradicts numerous defined Catholic dogmas, from which there can be no recession.
