You Asked, I Answered

As I’m sure you know, one of my favorite things about being a Franciscan and a priest is answering questions. I love to hear what people are interested in and I love being able to work through difficult answers. Frankly, it’s why I started writing the blog and posting videos in the first place.

This week, I answer a handful of questions submitted by the Internet about faith, the Church, and being a priest. If you have any questions, be sure to post them on Facebook, Twitter, or the comments section of this video.

  1. Dear Fr. Casey,
My 10 year old son says he is going to become a priest. He has said this since he was six. When asked, “Why?” he says he just knows. I don’t want to discourage him, but of my four children he would not be the one I would suspect of having received “the call”. He is a sweet boy who loves God and our Faith, but is daily being scolded for being disobedient and influencing his younger siblings to do so too. We pray he will outgrow that behavior. My son is highly intelligent and seems resigned to this future even though he is scared of being in the spotlight. He won’t even hypothetically entertain the idea of any other vocation.
Do you think it is possible in one so young to know God’s plan for him? How do you recommend we react (or don’t) as parents? I’d really appreciate your advice. We don’t want to get in God’s way or at the same time put undo expectations on a child.

  2. I watched your YouTube video: “Abortion is NOT that important”. You need to reexamine Mother Theresa’s words on this issue. Many of the social injustice issues with which the left are obsessed, would be healed by following, first and foremost, “Thou Shalt Not Kill”. And most egregiously, the least of our brothers and sisters, the vulnerable unborn. This IS the issue that comes FIRST. NOTHING will ever flourish in this world, there will NEVER be peace, if the atrocity of this most grievous sin, abortion, the worst holocaust in the history of the human race, continues. THIS is biggest affront to God, of ANYTHING. It MUST come first. And people need to stand up BRAVELY, not pussyfoot around, in order to make the left feel better about themselves. Again, look at Mother Theresa’s words, and then start calling things out for what they are: sin that is on the level of diabolical, which God will still forgive through repentance. You gave a mixed message, not the voice of truth. First comes JUSTICE. Then, social justice.

  3. Dear father Casey, I have two questions: 1. Why are priests called father? 2. What is your view of the Lord of the rings and Tolkien as a Catholic author? Thank you.
